First, you'll need to cut the main root, leaving several smaller roots intact. This is what will stunt the growth. Next, find a low profile pot, fill the bottom with pebbles, then top with bonsai mix. This could be 1/ 2 potting soil and 1/ 2 sandy gravel (sand to gravel size mix). Withholding nutrients will also help with the stunting of the tree's growth. I would wait till the fall to start shaping, giving the tree a chance to recover from having its main root cut off. Then you can shape using wires, and you can start cutting some branches; be careful not to cut off more than 10% of its branches at a time or it will get too stressed. Also, make sure the bush is outdoors. It needs to be in its environment (not indoors), to get a true bonsai tree. |
